‘The Physician heals, Nature makes well’ – Aristotle.
The Pure Aromatherapy Shop arose from a long-standing passion for quality in essential oils and related products. That in turn stems from knowledge about their use, given to me from professional massage therapists and aromatherapy practitioners.
From them, I learned about the many ways in which we can use natural ingredients to support our wellness. The thing to note here is that wellness has a much wider meaning than ‘not ill’ – though of course, it has an inextricable link with health. This article from Pfizer, What is Wellness, quotes the World Health Organization’s (WHO) definition of wellness: ‘a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being. And not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.’ I like the quote from Aristotle at the top of this blog – it sums that up well.
Aromatherapy and essential oils then benefit both our wellness and our environment. With that in mind, I set up the Pure Aromatherapy Shop to offer quality oils and products at an accessible price. One of the ways in which we achieve that is by opting for no-nonsense packing. So, for instance, our Pure Aromatherapy Shop body butters, come in plain, white plastic tubs that are easy to repurpose or recycle.
The penetrative power of essential oils is immense. They even work on internal organs. And further, aromatherapy is not a case of mind over matter:
If you believe in Aromatherapy… it works! If you don’t believe in Aromatherapy… it works!” – Cristina Proano-Carrion
What is aromatherapy
At this point it’s worthwhile to give a definition of what the term aromatherapy means and how it works.
Aromatherapy centres itself around ideas of holistic medicine. It uses natural plant extracts to enhance health and wellbeing. Many massage therapists use aromatic essential oils in combination with their massage techniques to boost both their clients’ emotional and physical health.
‘Aromatherapy is a caring, hands on therapy which seeks to induce relaxation, to increase energy, to reduce the effects of stress and to restore lost balance to mind, body, and soul.’ – Robert Tisserand

How it works
The effect of aromatherapy comes from its ability to stimulate receptors in the nose responsible for smell. It sends messages by the olfactory cells to the bit of the brain that controls survival drive, emotions and instinct. It’s called the limbic system. Your olfactory cells recognize scents as particular aromatic molecules that fit into receptors on said cells. Although scientists don’t have full understanding, they believe that the action of these nerve signals causes powerful mood changes in response to certain smells.
‘Aromatherapy conveys the concept of healing with aromatic substances’ – Robert Tisserand
Pure Aromatherapy quality
There’s several important points to consider when determining the quality of the aromatherapy oils that you’re about to buy. Here are two for you to digest:
- Does the seller of the essential oil in which you’re interested give the full Latin name of the plant? That’s important for you to know that you’re getting the right essential oil. For instance, there are several species of lavender – so if that information isn’t given how can you know you’re getting the right one?
- Also, does the seller you’re looking at name the country in which the plants were grown? The chances are that a domestic consumer won’t have the know-how to differentiate between oils from different countries. But it’s useful information for aromatherapists. It also indicates that the company is marketing itself to those in the know as well as general consumers.
We’re pleased to say that here at the Pure Aromatherapy Shop we do both those things. If you’ve got any questions about us and our products then contact us here.
