Botanical Name: Syzgium Aromaticum. Plant Part: Leaves. Extraction Method: Steam. Origin: Madagascar. Clove is derived from the tree Syzgium Aromaticum, an evergreen tropical tree growing up to 9m. The flower buds are collected before they open, for distillation. The Portuguese, Dutch and French have all had a hand in the introduction of Clove to Zanzibar, Reunion, Madagascar and a few islands in the Caribbean. Clove has a strong, hot, spicy and penetrating aroma and is Amber to Brown in colour.
Clove is well known as an excellent remedy for soothing toothache and gum infections and has many antiseptic properties and is best used in lower concentrations. For external use only.
